Oncology
This is a branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. Currently, most cancer cases are handled by the Baptist hospital or referred to Douala. In Cameroon, there is a great lack of national data on the frequency and trends of cancers. Some hospital-based studies have described features of cancers being mostly gynecological and urogenital. In 2008, IARC estimated that the population age-based standardized incidence of cancers per year in Cameroon and the possibility of receiving a diagnosis before age 75 was 8.5%. the risk of dying from cancer before age 75 was 11%.
For both sexes, the five most common cancers include breast, uterine, liver, cervix, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and prostate cancers (the most common in men).
